Wood pellets In Ireland

Heating With Pellets | No comments

Pellets are sold by fuel merchants in the following form:

In 10 to 15 kg bags for handy filling of the attached supply container or small to medium sized separate hoppers.
For automated pellet feed systems pellets can be delivered in loose bulk and stored in a purpose built large hopper and usually minimum delivery is 3 tons .

Pellets must be transported and stored absolutely dry. Therefore, the pellets must be protected against moisture during transport, storage and through to combustion. however this is not difficult to achieve even in our inclement weather.

WHY CHOOSE WOOD PELLETS AS A HEATING FUEL?

Running costs;

Wood pellet are much cheaper than other fuels especially electricity,oil and LPG, especially loose bulk pellets – up to 50% saving on home heating oil. however with lower and lower heat requirements and therefor smaller boilers for new buildings it often makes more since to use bagged pellets and do away with larger storage.

Building regulations;

As wood pellet heating systems are considered CO2 neutral they can easily meet the regulations of 10kwh/m2 of renewable energy.

Environmental friendliness of pellets

Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere as they grow. During combustion of wood, precisely this amount of CO2 is liberated again, so it is no higher than would have occurred had the tree rotted naturally in the forest. Heating with wood pellets is therefore CO2 neutral and makes an important contribution to climate protection.

Wood Pellets

Wood pellets are made from wood shavings and sawdust and are used in highly efficient and convenient automatic wood boilers.

Wood pellets are made from wood shavings and sawdust and are used in highly efficient and convenient automatic wood boilers. Because they have a low moisture and ash content wood pellets burn very efficiently. What’s more they are compact and easy to store. Typically pellets come in bags (ideal for stoves or smaller boiler systems) or are delivered in bulk by truck (ideal for boiler systems with bulk stores). Wood pellets can be ordered from local fuel merchants.

Pellets facts (Typical)

Dry matter content     90-92%
Ash content               0.5%
Diameter                   6-8mm
Length                      4*diameter,
Density                     650 kg/m3,
Volume                     1.54m3/tonne pellet,
Energy                      4.7 kWh/kg pellet
Benefit                      1kg wood pellet replaces 0.41kg of light fuel oil

Wood pellets are upgraded or refined wood fuels which have been produced from sawdust, grinding dust, shavings, bark or cutter chips by drying and pressing. No additives are needed to produce them. Lignin released in the pressing process binds the wood material. They are compact and easy to store and use for fully automatic burning in wood pellet boilers or stoves.

Good quality wood pellets with a moisture content of 8% will have a calorific value of approximately 4,700 kWh/tonne.

The Wood Fuel Quality Assurance (WFQA) Scheme

The wood fuel quality assurance (WFQA) scheme certifies wood fuel meeting internationally recognised standards. It is an independent certification scheme designed to enhance the quality of wood fuels in Ireland.

To be certified, a wood fuel supplier must have stringent quality control measures in place, maintain proper records, source fuel only from sustainably managed forests and above all – Sell wood fuel with proven quality. We hope the scheme will allow the consumer to have full confidence in the fuel they buy, and that the use of wood will grow in Ireland – supporting jobs and the environment.
